Along the Carretera Austral

The Austral is driven slowly, with time to pull over at every bend. By RandomTrip.

Do not try to see all of it

Do not try to see all of it. Choose a stretch, a town to sleep in, and a day without kilometers. The landscape changes so much that rushing is the easiest way to miss it. A couple on the Austral wins by deciding to stay, not by adding towns to the map.

Pick the stretch by where you can sleep well and head out again without an endless day. If every day ends at night and tired, the road becomes a transfer. The route deserves that you get out.

Where to stop

Stop where there is a viewpoint with no name. Those are the ones that never make the map and always make the story. Five minutes are enough if you both get out. A photo from the car does not count as having been there.

Pack a layer even if the sun is out. The weather changes on a bend. An extra layer on the seat is less annoying than being cold during the only stretch where the place was worth staying.

The town you sleep in

Sleep in a small town, not in the one that is “on the way” at ten at night. Arriving while it is light lets you walk, eat something that is not the only place open, and recognize the street in the morning. That morning is part of the route, even if the car is still.

A day without kilometers is not a lost day. It is the day the landscape stops being a series of bends and becomes a place. Walk until you can see the water or the forest and come back for lunch. That is enough.

How you tell it later

Later you will not remember every kilometer. You will remember a bend, a town, and the stretch when you turned the engine off. Build the trip for those three, not for the full line on the map.

If you have time left at the end, go back to a place you already saw instead of adding a new one. Recognizing the Austral is the proof you went slowly. Seeing all of it is usually the proof you did not get out.
