Hidden Beaches of Latin America

The beach worth finding is usually a little past the easy path. By RandomTrip.

Hidden in the hour

It is not always hidden on the map. Sometimes it is hidden in the hour: early, before everyone else arrives. The same beach at eight in the morning and at two in the afternoon are two places. For a couple, the first hour is the one that counts.

Walk twenty minutes farther than you planned. The easy path ends where the people start. A little past that there is usually the same water and fewer towels. You do not need a secret. You need to not stop at the first access.

How to get there and back

Bring water and head back while there is still light. A beach with no services is not a problem if the way back is already decided. It is a problem if it gets dark and the path that seemed short can no longer be seen. The time to leave is chosen when you arrive, not when you want to stay a little longer.

Ask in town whether the path closes with the tide or with rain. That question saves more than any pin on the map. If the answer is unclear, pick another beach. There are many. There are not many afternoons.

What to bring

Little: water, something for the sun, a layer in case the wind changes, and a bag so you leave with your own trash. A hidden beach is easy to ruin if every couple leaves what they brought. Taking everything back is part of having been there.

Do not build a camp. If you need an umbrella, a cooler, and four chairs, stay on the beach with services. The hidden one is good because it is small and because you leave when you actually want real shade.

A little is enough

A small beach, with no services and the other person as your only company, is enough for the whole trip. You do not need to cover the coast. You need a stretch of time when the place belongs to the two of you and everyone else has not arrived.

If that stretch goes well, do not turn it into a list of beaches. Come back to the same one the next day, earlier. Hiding is not finding a new name. It is arriving first.
